Life as an Online College Student

Today is December 31, 2008. It is a Wednesday. Today is New Year’s Eve. This means that it is the last day of the year. Everyone goes out drinking and partying on New Year’s Eve. I never have. I cannot stand the taste of alcohol, neither can my grandma. It is just not my thing. I am more the responsible, grounded type of person. I am young and I can legally drink but to me I just do not understand why people enjoy alcohol so much. I mean drugs are banned but alcohol, which causes many accidents and fatalities is legal. I never have understood why this is. Cops know that people will drink and drive but realistically nothing can really be done about this. I had read that you have to have a breathalyzer test put on your ignition when you have multiple dui’s why can’t we have those now especially for teen aged drivers? I mean why would people oppose it since it is to protect people from drunk drivers. This New Year’s Eve we need to remember to look out for others so that we can help to prevent drunk driving accidents from occurring.

Today is December 30, 2008. Today is Tuesday. It was very cold. My front door on my apartment blew open when I was asleep this morning. I woke up to a very cold apartment. I am lucky that someone did not come into my apartment since the front door flew wide open and you could just walk inside. I did some laundry today. The dryer was broken. It make me lose five quarters. It just turned on and whirred it did not dry anything so I had to search my apartment for five more quarters to dry my laundry. Luckily, I found five, It was very close since I have no cash and do not get paid until after the New Year. I save my quarters so when they are gone, they are truly gone. My landlord never keeps up the repairs. There is a light bulb that is out that is a walkway to the stairs. He still has not fixed it and it has been a week. It is dangerous because someone could hide underneath the stairs and hurt someone. It is hard to find a cheap rent in an apartment that is well kept up. Hopefully, the weather will be better tomorrow.

Today is December 29, 2008. Today is Monday. I started my day by reading some emails. I hate spam. I have one email account that has over three hundred spam messages in it. I had to delete every single one. It took a while. I do not know why companies constantly send me spam. It annoys me to no end. I did some cleaning today. It is hard to know what to throw out because some day you might need something that you threw away. I cleaned up my living room. I still have more to do.I have a lot of Christmas stuff and boxes to get rid of. It seems like at Christmas you need to buy tons of trash bags just to keep up with the mess that occurs. I also took a trip the the grocery store. I am always amazed at how far sixty dollars does not  go at my local grocery store. I always bring cash and this shopping trip made me broke. Meat and other items have really gone up in price in the last few years. I try to get basic essentials but it is hard to buy everything that I need while on such a tight budget.

Today is December 28, 2008. Today is Sunday. Right now, I am watching boring football games. I guess that this week decides who is going to the playoffs and who is going home for the season.The Philadelphia Eagles are playing the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are doing horribly. The score is three to forty four. This is basically a slaughter. I am not a big football fan. I can watch the games but it is not a religion to me the way that it is to most men. My dad was not a big football fan. He was a big Celtics fan and always will be. I remember watching Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish play basketball at the Old Boston Garden. It takes me back that is for sure. It seems like the wealthier these basketball players become the less authentic they become. Money can go to your head and basketball players are given millions of dollars every year for just playing a game. I will never understand why they are paid so much, if they were paid less like maybe a half million for five years then tickets and merchandise would be so much cheaper.Well, my vacation is still going strong. I made some spaghetti for dinner. It came out okay.Hopefully, tomorrow will be fun!

Today is December 27, 2008. I have had internet issues all day long. It is a Saturday. I have had issues with my Internet connection for the last few days. My Internet ethernet cable is going so I need to replace it as soon as humanly possible. The Internet is my lifeline, without it, I can do nothing at all. Many people feel the exact same way. The Internet has become an essential part of many people’s lives. We hate to admit that we rely on technology, but we do. My grandma used to shop through catalogs, now she shops online. It is harder for older people to understand computers but it allows them to keep in touch with their grandchildren and children so many older people love that so they learn about the Internet. Now, she emails all of us and loves it. Many people use the Internet to keep their lives organized. I use mine for school, emailing, and sending pictures to family members. It can be a real cost savings because you do not have to constantly print out photographs. I think this technology will be around for many years to come.

Today is December 26, 2008. It is a Friday. Today is the day after Christmas. It is a very sad time. I mean people are at the malls trying to score bargains and I am at my apartment. I never put my Christmas tree up. It is sad for the holiday to be over. The next holiday is New Year’s. I have no fun plans for New Year’s Eve. I never go out, there are too many people on the road and I am afraid of drunk drivers. I prefer to just stay in and have some food and watch the ball drop. I know that it is boring but it keeps me safe and warm inside of my apartment.I am not the adventurous type of person. I wish I was more fun but having fun can be very expensive and sadly I do not have any friends who live near me. All of my friends left and went to college three years ago. It is sad, but I guess that there are seasons in life. You need to make new friends and still keep the old ones. I am currently looking for a job so maybe I will meet people through a job if I can get one. I have been looking for a job for about eighteen months with no success.

Today is December 25,2008. Today is a Thursday. It is Christmas Day! Merry Christmas to everyone! My Christmas was okay. I still do not have my Christmas tree up. I was up last night putting together something. My apartment is still a wreck. I try to keep it clean but time just gets away from me very fast. I got some clothes and a gift card for Christmas, not much else. I did not have anything to unwrap this year, which was not a first for me but I still do not like it. I love unwrapping gifts but when you are an adult  you rarely get wrapped gifts anymore. I bought my grandma a heart necklace, she said that she liked it.I have not called my other family members yet. My grandma is watching movies today, she prefers to have her visitors before Christmas. She has to work tomorrow and Saturday so I guess she wants to relax before she has to work. I hope that everyone is having a great Christmas!  Next big event is New Years!! Yay 2009 and a new president!

Today is December 24, 2008. Today is Christmas Eve! Yay! It is one day until Christmas. I am scrambling to get the apartment clean and get the Christmas tree up. I plugged in my Christmas lights and sadly they are dead. This means that I have to go all the way to Walgreens to get a new set. I also need more decorations because I cannot find mine anywhere. I hate losing things because it can be expensive to replace that stuff. I got some new clothes today. I got some really great buys at a small store that had reduced prices on clothes. I spent forty two dollars and got ten new things. This was a pretty good buy for me. I like finding stores that have good buys on clothes. I am all about price not designer label. I never buy designer clothes, to me it is a huge waste of money. I know many people who want something just because it say Chanel, Dior, or Sean John. Why can’t you just design your own labels and just stick them on cheaper things? The products are the same they just have a different label. I’d rather have a little money in savings and have discount clothes then be broke and wearing designer things.

Today is December 23, 2008. Today is  Tuesday. It is two days until Christmas. My Christmas tree is still not up yet. I hope that I can find it because the garage is so cluttered. You cannot find anything in there. It is cold but it is not as blustery cold as it was yesterday. Not too much went on today. I have not gone out today. One thing that shocked me yesterday was my electricity bill. I have electric heat and it costs $453.00 this month. I was shocked since it is a one bedroom apartment. It has cinder blocks and windows that open to the  side so they are old and not well insulated. The wind basically comes through them because they are so thin. I have to crank the heat all the way up just to get a little heat. It is very expensive and hopefully I will be able to find a new apartment next summer to help alleviate this very high electricity bill. I guess this is just a part of life, you need to ask what the average utility bill is before you decide to lease an apartment.

Today is December 22, 2008. Today is Monday. It is three days until Christmas. It was bitterly cold today. I cannot remember it being this cold this early in winter in the last few years. This winter has been cold and I expect that it will stay that way. Today was a slow day for me. I am not in school for a while so I am on my holiday vacation. I still have not put up my Christmas tree yet. I have a small artificial tree that is about five feet tall.Part of the base is missing and I cannot find it in the garage. I might have to go and buy a new one. I hope to find it, since I spent a lot of money on it. I made a chicken and rice soup today. I am no chef, and I have tried to make soup before but it never works out well. Soup looks easy but for some reason the chicken broth always dissolves early and turns it into mush that tastes bad. My vacation is still mundane. I hope Christmas is better than my boring school vacation.
